Soft fabrics for sensitive skin

Why cotton and soft knits are a good choice for everyday kids' wear, and what to check on the label.
Children's skin is thinner and more sensitive than adult skin, so the fabric of everyday clothes matters. A little attention when you shop makes a big difference to comfort.
Choose breathable fabrics. Cotton and soft cotton blends let the skin breathe and are a good choice for t-shirts, sets and homewear, especially in warm weather.
Feel the inside of the piece. Seams, labels and prints can rub against the skin. Flat seams, soft labels and prints that do not feel stiff or rubbery are more comfortable for long wear.
For cold days, prefer layers over one heavy piece. A soft cotton layer next to the skin, then a sweatshirt or a jacket, lets you add or remove a layer when the weather or the room temperature changes.
Wash new clothes before the first wear, and pay attention if your child's skin reacts to a certain fabric or detergent. For a skin problem, ask your child's doctor.
